 Links are divided into seven categories:

  • Peer Helping and Peer Mediation Links, which include links to a variety of peer programs, provincial, state, and national peer organizations, and resources for peer conflict resolution and mediation, peer education, and peer ministry.

  • National Peer Helpers Association - Provides a yearly conference, a quarterly journal, and standards for peer programs in the United States.

  • The Ontario Peer Helpers' Association - Provides a structure and network for peer helping programs associated with schools in Ontario.

  • The North Carolina Peer Helper Association - A professional organization dedicated to encouraging, promoting and improving peer helping programs in schools, business/industry and the community.

  • The Nebraska Peer Education Network

  • American Self-Help Clearinghouse - Provides search engine for info on over 800 different national U.S., international, and model self-help peer support groups for wide range of stressful life problems (most have a hotlink). Also has listing of local self-help group clearinghouses worldwide, suggestions for starting peer support groups, and a comprehensive contact list of professional organizations and associations. Most of these groups have "buddy" or mentor-like opportunties where those new to a particularly stressful life problem can learn from those "who have been there."   • PEER Center, Inc. - A consumer-operated empowerment/drop-in center, located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Programs include support groups, crisis intervention, sheltered workshops, computer lab, recreational activities, and a housing assistance program. They are a non-profit organization, operated completely by Consumers/Survivors, with a membership of over 1,000 consumers.

  • S.O.S., Inc. - Students for Other Students - A nonprofit organization dedicated to the funding, development and operation of peer tutoring programs in public primary and secondary schools. They offer a number of resources to schools seeking to operate student-to-student tutoring programs, including sample documents, regulations and protocols. Their online bookstore features copies of studies that demonstrate the benefits of peer tutoring, books for sale, and bibliographic information. They also provide links to similar programs that involve peer tutoring and related ideas.

  • Simon Fraser University Peer Helping Program - University student peer helpers supervised by staff psychologists are trained to assist others who have concerns about academic performance and career development. A Mentoring Program run jointly by the Alumni Relations Office and the Counselling Service is now in operation. Peer Helpers assist students in preparing for, and debriefing, meetings with SFU Alumni Mentors.

  • Stanford University Bridge Peer Counseling Center - Student peer counselors provide 24 hour assistance.

  • Florida Atlantic University HIV/AIDS Peer Educators - A university peer education program specializing in HIV/AIDS education and prevention.

  • California Friday Night Live - An innovative program for teens emphasizing alcohol-free and substance abuse prevention, mentoring, and peer support.

  • Anti-Bullying Peer Program - ABC is an anti-bullying peer counselling scheme at Elliott Durham School, Nottingham, England. The school is an 11-16 comprehensive, serving a multi-racial inner city area. The site tells the history of this unique scheme with profiles of the peer counselors and more.

  • Taking the Bully by the Horns - A book and web page dedicated to helping children and young teens deal with bullies. Created and written by Kathy Noll, this self-help book explores different ways children and teenagers are bullied (both mentally and physically), how the bully becomes a bully, how the victim becomes a victim (sometimes there's a fine line between the two!), and what can be done about it. Links to other anti-bullying resources are provided.

  • The Peer Support Foundation Ltd. - An Australian, non-profit, community based organization which provides training and resources for teachers who wish to implement the Foundation program in schools for young people aged 5 to18 years.

  • Augsburg Youth and Family Institute - Information on current resources, training and services in peer ministry. On site and travelling, basic and advanced workshops in peer ministry.Trueman Hight & Associates - Run by the former President of the Missouri Peer Helping Association, Trueman Hight, this organization provides training and consulting in the area of ATOD prevention, peer helping, conflict mediation, team building, and action planing for students and staff.   • Peer Mentor Program - An Arizona-based, peer run mental health program.

  • St. Josephs (Singapore) Peer Program - The peer support and peer helping programme at St. Joseph's Institution, Singapore seeks to build a Community of Care within the school by empowering student leaders to help and care for other students in order to make the school a more warm and inviting place.

  • Nanaimo District Secondary School Peer Helping Program - The peer helping program of a high school located in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

  • The Centre for Adolescent Health - Located in Australia, this organization has one of the top peer-based support programs for adolescents with a variety of chronic health problems. Youth run the service and provide peer training to other youth.

  • Mouth-to-Mouth - An HIV/AIDS peer education program, located in San Jose, California, (408) 293-2747.

  • California Cancer Registrars Association - Provides peer support for cancer patients and their families.

  • Micah Inc - An Australian organization that sponsors a Young Mothers for Young Women Network that provides peer support, peer education, and advocacy. Members of the Network are young women who wish to share their experiences and support others who are pregnant, parenting, experiencing violence and isolation. A drop-in centre is staffed by young parenting women who have been trained in peer support.

  • National Group Rides And Designated Drivers - National GRADD is a non-profit organization that helps colleges and universities maintain safe ride home programs to save lives from drunken driving.

  • The Lesbian Gay Bi Youth Line - A toll-free province-wide peer support and information phone line for lesbian, gay and bisexual youth up to the age of 26 in Ontario, Canada.

  • Marion Foundation Teen Talk Zone - A free, teen and parent on-line peer counseling service which can also be contacted by telephone at 1-800-475-TALK.

  • The Joke's Over - Describes an interactive CD-ROM program to prevent sexual harassment among adolescents. An excellent learning tool and can be easily used by peer helpers to assist in harassment reduction and prevention.

  • Conflict Research Consortium Online conflict resolution course, full-text copies of more than 100 working papers, more than 650 categorized links conflict related web resources, searchable abstracts of key books in the fields of conflict resolution, peace research, and environmental dispute resolution. Online course in transformative mediation program and an international training program in strategies for dealing with difficult conflict.

  • Alternative Dispute Resolution Center- Substantial content focused on alternative dispute resolution and mediation, includes mediation papers, a comprehensive set of links on this topic and a list of institutions that provide dispute resolution education and training.

  • Mediation Training Institute International - Resources for managing conflict in the workplace, including peer mediation skills training for teams and workgroups.

  • The Justice Institute of British Columbia - The Justice Institute of British Columbia Centre for Conflict Resolution offers training in mediation and negotiation skills, resolving conflict in the workplace, prejudice reduction, working with groups, and many others Provides many training programs, most of which lead to certification. Their website provides a variety of links associated with conflict resolution, prevention of abuse, and critical incident debriefing.

  • Resources for Teachers on Conflict Resolution - Indiana University provides a variety of resources on conflict resolution and adolescent development.

  • Peace Institute - Developed for educational training staff to improve their skills with aggressive and violent youth. This active, rigorous curriculum is effective in developing positive pro-social skills in these youth, leading them to become responsible, caring and productive citizens. Located at 677 N.   • Footbag Peace Initiative - Works with at-risk youth and others using sports, craft and peer education -- specifically the popular, cooperative, yet largely undiscovered sport of hacky sack or footbag. The program includes athletic training, youth mentorship, leatherworking (sewing footbags) and prevention curriculum. Located at 400B Main Road, Gill, Massachusetts, 01376.

  • Triune Arts - A non-profit organization which includes a permanent ensemble of actors and directors that produce educational resources on a variety of subjects, including international development issues, youth employment training, cross-cultural communication and, more recently, alternative dispute and conflict resolution. One of their series, "Resolving Conflict Creatively in the School Community" includes two videos and on one of the videos peer mediators demonstrate in detail a four phase mediation process and encounter two circumstances where the process breaks down - when dealing with issues of alleged sexual harassment and racism. The entire set is available as a box set priced at $595 (Cdn) or $425 (US.

  • Solomon Publications - Self-instruction manuals for arbitrators and mediators.

  • Resource Publications, Inc. - Publications for educators, counsellors, and students with some great peer helping resources that can be used in church-based programs. Or send e-mail to info@rpinet.com

  • Accelerated Development - Publisher of academic and professional books for mental health practitioners, including counselors, therapists, psychologists and other human service professionals.   • Peer Problem Solving - A technique developed to assist children in resolving their own problems. A video and workshops are available.

Youth and Adult Services Links

  • Youth Works - A comprehensive site for everyone who works with youth and for youth themselves. A great source of ideas and many connections to youthwork resources on the internet. You can also submit your own best ideas, access print resources, and use interactive learning opportunities to your knowledge and skills. Stories will give you some insight into how youth, and those who care for them, see their lives.

  • Team Youth Resource for At-Risk Youth - The objectives of Team Youth are to increase public and private support for youth programs and the young people they serve; reduce negative information that limits opportunities for at-risk young adults; and provide opportunities for at-risk youth to get off street corners and into positive initiatives including skills training, education, jobs and support services.

  • The Great Kids Network - Established to showcase contributions made by kids around the world. The Network consists of this Web site and a weekly television series still in development. Both the Web site and the television show are designed to highlight stories of kids volunteering to help others. Users can send in profiles of kids they feel are great and tell their stories. Users will find a page of links to organizations looking for volunteers. The site features a forum where users can answer questions or talk about issues important to them.

  • Grey Owl Tutoring - An editing and tutoring service for students working on essays, reports, and such. Provided by Dr. Glen Wheeler, an experienced technical editor specializing in the Arts and Sciences. Rough drafts may be sent as e-mail attachments.   • Teenworks - A resource center and meeting place for communities fighting alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse. Teens working with teens in a variety of helping projects.

  • B.C. Council for Families - Provides a variety of prevention services and resources focusing on Marriage Education and Relationship Enhancement, Early Childhood and Parenting, Parent/Teen Relationships, Suicide Intervention and Prevention, and Family Violence Prevention. Has a variety of publications in their resource centre; supports National Family Week, Intergenerational Week, and International Family Day, and acts as an advocate for families.

  • Anonymous Sexual Abuse Recovery - Provides information and self-help support for victims and survivors of childhood sexual abuse/sexual assault. Includes extensive online library, in depth links, and self-help support in message board format.

  • US Labor Litigation Services - USLC provides affordable litigation alternatives for small/medium sized companies. These dispute resolution services are effective, timely, convenient and inexpensive.

  • International Alliance for Invitational Education (IAIE) - Developed by William Purkey and Betsy Siegel to put caring, democracy, process, and person into education.

  • EAP of Tucson - An excellent series of links and specific services for employee assistance, mental health, and other support services. Can also be contacted by e-mail at: kbaker@azstarnet.com.

  • California Association of Student Councils (CASC) - Provides leadership in ethics, integrity, and collaborative decision-making by training students, advisors, and education programs to enhance the quality of education in activities and programs outside the classroom that build citizenship and encourage self-esteem. CASC serves as an advocate for youth, provides a channel for student views and empowers youth to take action.

  • The Student Alliance - Organize and trains middle school to high school students to take an active role with principals, administrators and local school boards in addressing and solving problems in their schools. A national network of student leaders and student school board members.

  • Consequences - Alcohol and drug abuse prevention presentations for British Columbia schools.

  • Halton Community Action for a Drug Free Youth - This is a practical, easy-to-use tool kit for community action to prevent youth substance abuse.

  • Non-Smokers Action Web Site - A variety of links, products, and services dedicated to non-smoking.

  • Resources for Teachers on Conflict Resolution - Indiana University provides a variety of resources on adolescent development.

  • Making It Happen - Resources for middle school educators of students with diverse learning abilities.

  • Timberline Press, Inc. - Publishers of the PUMSY self esteem guidance and counseling programs for K-5. Skill-based, structured and sequential programs teaching responsibility, decision-making, self-esteem, positive thinking, refusal skills, conflict resolution, anger control, coping with loss.

  • Youth Resources - A great list of resources for volunteers that work with youth in Canada. Organized by national and provincial categories.

Counseling and Professional Links

  • Counsellor Resource Centre - With service in both French and English, this website was developed to provide a forum for career development and employment counselling specialists throughout Canada. The site provides information about best practices and covers four main search areas: helping yourself, helping clients, helping each other, and helping for the future.

  • Kids Help Phone (Jeunesse J'écoute - A professional telephone help line for children and youth at 1.800.668.6868. Helps young people with topics like friendship and love, diversity, family, birth control, STD's & AIDS, eating disorders, drug abuse, abuse and violence, sexual violence, and suicide. Has sections on tips for parents, discussion groups, and links to other helping resources.

  • The Mental Health Foundation - A United Kingdom charity improving the lives of people with mental health problems or learning disabilities. They use their research, service development and information to increase understanding and meet the needs of their clients.   • Doug's Internet Resources for Counselors - The most comprehensive list of organizations, counseling degree programs, and helping resources for counselors available on the WWW. Continuously updated.

  • Arkansas Trainers' Network - This Network seeks to facilitate the free exchange of information among Arkansas' trainers, training managers, and training consultants. Resources include over 250 indexed links to training and development resources.

  • Therapy Online: - A pioneering effort to provide caring for people via online professional therapists.

  • Judy Swaim's Home Page - Judy is a school counselor in Huntsville, Alabama and has put some resources together for school counselor folks.

  • PedagoNet - A service for exchanging learning materials and resources. This service rated the Peer Resources Website as an outstanding example of its kind on the web.

  • Psychological Healing - Created by Dr. Laurence Hunt, a psychologist, a series of structured exercises for self and interpersonal awareness and psychological healing. (A collection of these exercises will be ready for publication in early 1997.)

  • Canadian Guidance and Counselling Association - Services and support for the counselling profession across Canada.

  • DreamUp - Useful information on dreams and their interpretation with emphasis on deepening self-understanding.

  • Michael Greer's Project Management Site - Comprehensive resources, some of which are free, on instructional development and project management from one of the leading experts in this field. A list of upcoming workshops and talks as well as links to other resources that can aid in project planning and getting the most from your instructional goals.

  • Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse - A non-profit organization working to minimize the harm associated with the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. They provide a national clearinghouse, including fact sheets, newsletters, event notices, bibliographies and reports on topics such as FAS/FAE, cannabis issues, gambling, and other life challenges.

  • Grief Recovery On-Line - This award-winning web site is an international gateway to resources for life-threatening illness and end of life issues. Their primary mission is to provide assistance to persons who are grieving.
