Preparing for Health Care
Level One

Course Description

Overview
Designed in partnership with Regional Occupations Program and Healdsburg General Hospital, the class provides an basic foundation in anatomy and physiology; in addition, students learn a common set of skills necessary to all health care employees. Job shadow opportunities will be available at Healdsburg General Hospital in the Business Office, X-ray Department, Laboratory, Medical-Surgical Department, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Emergency Room. Students must provide evidence of recent TB screening, a second MMR vaccine and the series of three Hepatitis B vaccines. A dress code is required and students must be able to provide their own transportation to and from Healdsburg General Hospital (it is walking distance from the school). The classroom will be training a site for future employees therefore what is expected at the job site is expected in the classroom.

Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this course students will be able to:
· Understand the concepts of confidentiality, morality and ethical/legal issues in medicine.
· Utilize communication skills to provide basic education to a specific patient population.
· Identify and explain human needs and the application of those needs in the medical environment.
· Communicate with patients and staff on a professional level.
· Recognize and use appropriate medical terminology.
· Identify Body Systems and their functions.
· Describe the various growth and development stages.
· Perform CPR and First Aid on an as needed basis.
· Perform specific job skills necessary for careers in the health care field.
· Measure and record vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respiration.
· Perform medical aseptic procedures.
· Maintain an environment that reduces the risk to patients and staff and reduces the transmission of disease.
· Maintain proper body alignment.
· Identify and explain aspects of a health care facility and related job practices.

Participation Criteria
To qualify for participation in Preparing for Health Care, Level One, the student shall:
· Practice good personal hygiene and health practices.
· Display an appropriate attitude and behavior in the classroom and clinical sites.
     · shows responsibility
     · is honest
     · uses appropriate language
     · speaks respectfully to teacher, other students, clinical staff and patients
· Demonstrate the use of good judgment and safety in all areas.
· Provide appropriate dress for lab, field, and clinical settings.
· Attends full school days at least 90% of the time.
· No late work accepted

Dress Code
Because we will be in contact with the professional world and be representing our program to the public sector, appearance will be important.
· A presentable, professional appearance will be maintained at all times during site visits and in the classroom.
· HHS Health Pathway Shirts will be available for purchase. They should be worn during site visits and during guest speaker presentations.
· No ragged, holey jeans, or cutoffs allowed to be worn during site visits or guest speaker presentations.
· No tank tops, strapless tops, or shirts with drug, alcohol or sex designs allowed in class or during site visits.
· No short, shorts or short, short skirts allowed during site visits.
· No opened-toed shoes allowed during site visits and job shadowing.

Grading
The first semester grade will be determined at the end of the semester based on the criteria below (Six week grades will be progress reports ONLY, based on the material and assignments covered during each grading period):
· Semester Grade:
   · CPR and First Aid Certification 10%
   · Quizzes, Practical Evaluations, Tests 25%
   · Notebook 20% -Completeness, Organization, and Peer Evaluation
   · Daily class and Homework Assignments/Projects 25% Including quality of Notebook assignments
   · Final Exam 20%
Total 100%

To receive an "A", "B", or "C" grade a student must receive CPR and First Aid Certification and demonstrate exemplary class attendance. Material missed for unexcused absences CANNOT be made up. Late assignments will be penalized (10% minimum to 100% maximum).

· ATTENDANCE: Attendance is critical for success. Due to the nature of this course, much of the information will be presented through guest speakers, field trips, and job shadowing. It is extremely difficult to make up work or certification if you are absent.

· In order to enroll in the second semester of Preparing for Health Care, Level 1 and job shadow, a student must pass CPR and First Aid (90% required), and the student must receive a "C" grade or higher in the first semester.

Preparing for Health Care, Level
Notebook

Notebooks should be brought to class daily.

Notebook should include:
· class notes
· handouts
· illustrations (12-14)
· common disorders of body systems (24-28)
· tests and quizzes
· practical evaluations
· quick writes
· response papers

Guidelines for illustrations:
· All text portions of your illustration must be typed or neatly written. Text should include key terms or parts, function, and brief definitions.
· All illustrations must be done with pencil, colored pencils, or black pen and ink. Each illustration must be in an 8 ½" by 11" format.
· Included with each illustration list two common disorders of that body system (with the exception of pulse points).
